Navigating a hospital or retirement home is a challenge under normal circumstances for healthy individuals, navigating through a facility with diminished health or mental capacities is incredibly difficult. An integral part of every facility is to provide signage and clues to find your way.

The definition of wayfinding is: signs, maps, and other graphic or audible methods used to convey location and directions to travelers.

Wayfinding for hospitals and retirement facilities can go much deeper than that. Color, architectural elements, furniture, and yes artwork can all assist in wayfinding and are sometimes referred to as “landmarking.” There are many ways to use art as a marker, and most effectively if a theme is developed for each area.
